OEM & ODM Sourcing

Custom manufacturing in China spans two models: OEM, where your design is manufactured to your specification, and ODM, where a manufacturer develops a product around your requirements using its existing capability. We help buyers define which model fits, identify capable manufacturers and manage the steps between an idea and a production-ready specification.

When it fits

When OEM/ODM sourcing applies

You have a product design and need a manufacturer to build it to specification.

You want to adapt an existing manufacturer design under your brand (private label).

You need tooling, prototyping or qualification samples before mass production.

You need clarity on IP ownership, tooling costs and who owns the moulds.

Scope

Possible deliverables

  • OEM vs ODM recommendation with trade-offs
  • Specification review and gap analysis
  • Manufacturer shortlist with capability mapping
  • Tooling and IP ownership questions for negotiation
  • Prototype and sample plan with approval criteria
  • Pre-production readiness checklist

Process

OEM/ODM process

  1. 01

    Model selection

We assess whether your project is best served by OEM, ODM or a hybrid, and document the trade-offs.

  2. 02

    Specification

Drawings, materials, finishes, packaging and compliance requirements are consolidated into a sourcing brief.

  3. 03

    Manufacturer mapping

Candidates are shortlisted by the specific processes your product needs — injection moulding, assembly, electronics, finishing.

  4. 04

    Commercial and IP terms

Tooling costs, mould ownership, exclusivity and IP protection are addressed in the request and negotiation.

  5. 05

    Sample approval

Prototypes and samples are reviewed against the brief, with written approval criteria before production.

Honest boundaries

Honest boundaries

  • IP protection depends on contracts and jurisdiction — we help you raise the right questions but do not provide legal opinions.
  • Tooling and mould ownership must be explicit in the contract; assume nothing.
  • A great sample does not guarantee production consistency — inspections remain part of the quality plan.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between OEM and ODM?

OEM means your design is manufactured to your specification. ODM means a manufacturer uses or adapts its own design around your requirements. Each has different cost, IP and minimum-order implications.

Who owns the moulds?

Mould ownership is a contractual matter and varies by negotiation. We include tooling cost and ownership questions in the sourcing process so the position is clear before you commit.

Do you handle private label?

Yes — private label development, packaging and compliance checks are part of our consumer goods and OEM/ODM sourcing work. See Consumer Goods & Private Label in Industries.
